1. Report and Remarks
Kanazawa Institute of Technology(henceforth, KIT) in Ishikawa Prefecture hosted the fifth ACM/ICPC Asia Regional Programming Contest in Japan on November 3rd and 4th. The contest was held in the multipurpose event hall on KIT Main Campus. The fifth ACM/ICPC Asia Regional Programming Contest in Japan was preceded by the first contest in Tokyo, the second contest in Kyoto, the third contest in Tsukuba, and the fourth contest in Hakodate, last year, hosted by Future University Hakodate. The fifth contest was held in Kanazawa, rich in history and traditional culture.
Due to the limitation of the space in the multipurpose event hall, 27 teams from 21 institutions were selected from 132 teams from 39 universities and colleges in the nationwide preliminary contest on the Internet on October 2nd. Grand champion, “frankdock” from Tokyo Institute of Technology, was delegated to the ACM/ICPC Asia Regional Programming Contest in Manila. Second Place team, “team YEM” was also delegated to the ACM/ICPC Asia Regional Programming Contest in Beijing.
The ACM/ICPC Asia Regional Programming Contest 2002 in Kanazawa (henceforth, Kanazawa 2002) was held on November 4th, inviting 6 foreign teams from 6 institutions in China and Taiwan, in addition to 27 domestic teams from 21 institutions, the winners in the Nationwide Preliminary Contest. In Kanazawa 2002, all teams competed the speed and accuracy in programming for 5 hours.
Although there were some students who participated in previous contests, it was obviously observed that most participating students experienced, for the first time, the international atmosphere. All students did their best to compete in programming during the contest. After the contest followed by the award ceremony, most students stayed one more night to exchange ideas and making new friends in the facility prepared by KIT. Especially, making friends from other universities as well as from other Asian countries was quite a valuable experience for the undergraduate students. Many positive feedback of this event was reported to the Kanazawa 2002 Committee.
In order to offer viewers on the web to feel the atmosphere of Kanazawa 2002, a WebCAM broadcasted the contest. On-going standings and snap shots had been constantly updated during the contest. Good number of hits both from inside Japan and from other countries during the contest proved that there were many people who were interested in this event. We were convinced that hosting Kanazawa 2002 was a very important contribution to promote increasing the number of high caliber programmers. The sixth Asia Regional Programming Contest in Japan is planning to be hosted by University of Aizu.
Last, certainly but not the least, we would like to extend our deepest and sincere gratitude to the educational organizations and societies as well as industries, without whose support and understanding the success of Kanazawa 2002 would not have been made. We would also like to thank the volunteers, the professors who served as judges and the KIT staff who stayed late every night preparing for the details of the contest programs and making the contest facilities perfect for Kanazawa 2002. My sincere appreciation and thanks go to my colleagues at KIT.
